On my first day volunteering I was nervous but the personality of people made me relax and it wasn’t long before I was my giggly self. I have kept coming back ever since. As it has gone on it’s a breeze; the people make it that way. It’s a magic place, I love it.

The Beacon is located on Napier Hill. It offers a range of activities and services to people who have neurological diseases or conditions. Every Tuesday is the women’s group which comes together for fun, relaxation and creativity. I refer to it as a glorified tea party with lots of giggles with the ladies. They don’t have to do anything in particular but some choose to do art work, play games, talk or listen to music.

This is a feel good place not a sterile environment where clients and workers can be themselves and have a good time. At lunchtime everyone sits down and eats together. There is no other place like the Beacon that treats clients this way, it is unique. One day a week I come in and do some good and hopefully make Hawke's Bay a better place.

Time spent outside of my work at the Beacon is divided between paid work and the numerous activities required of a mother with three boys. I am a hands on person, happy-go-lucky, making the most of each day.
